2010 Devon
GTX
California
is fast becoming a hotbed of boutique car companies, Fisker, Tesla, and now
Devon. Devon Motorworks is the brainchild of Michigan-born entrepreneur,
food-company owner, and car enthusiast Scott Devon. And the eye-catching 650 horsepower
Devon GTX coupe is its first product. Scott Devon calls the coupe "The
Next Great American Supercar."
That
may not be hyperbole. The GTX is built around some key pieces of Dodge Viper
hardware, including the basic frame and the 8.4-liter V10 driving the rear
wheels via a Tremec six speed manual transmission and limited slip
differential. That is some fast DNA. Former Le Mans 24 Hour class winner Justin
Bell gave a glimpse of the GTX's potential when he lapped the challenging 2.3 mile
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 1 minute 35.075 seconds. That just shades the
min/35.117 sec production car lap record set by pro racer Randy Pobst in the
Viper ACR during our 2008 Best Handling Car test, and handily beats the 1 min 35.8
recorded by Pobst for us this year in a Corvette ZR1 during our best Driver's
Car shootout a few weeks back. Bell says the GTX will exceed 200 mph, just like
the Viper Coupe. Devon has massaged the 8.4-liter V10 to develop 650 horsepower
at 6100 rpm, some 50 horses more than the Viper.
2010
Devon GTX Top Down View Changes include a revised intake system and new stainless-steel
exhaust. The car features a one piece carbon-fiber superstructure, plus
carbon-fiber body panels. Suspension is by way of cast-aluminum unequal length
wishbones front and rear with coil-over shocks, and steering is power-assisted
rack and pinion. Race car touches include brakes by StopTech that include giant
15 inch rotors up front with six piston calipers and standard center-lock
forged 18 inch front and 19 inch rear alloy wheels. Active damping and ride
height adjustment are planned, using shock technology developed for high-tech
military vehicles.
