DeLorean
DMC-12
The
DMC-12 was a sports car manufactured in Northern Ireland by the DeLorean Motor
Company from 1981 to 1983. Because it was the only car the company ever
produced the DMC-12 is often reffered to as simply a 'De Lorean'.
The
most notable features of the DeLorean DMC-12 were the gull-wing doors and
brushed stainless steel body panels which gave the car its unique color and
texture. There are also painted DMC-12's in existence as well as three gold
plated cars. The stainless steel body panels of the DMC-12 are fixed to a
fiberglass monocoque underbody. The underbody is affixed to a double-Y frame
chassis, derived from the Lotus Esprit platform and utilises four-wheel
independent suspension, coil springs, and telescopic shock absorbers. The front
suspension used double wishbones, while the rear was a multi-link setup.
The
styling of the DeLorean DMC-12 was produced by the prolific automotive designer
Giorgetto Giugiaro of Ital Design.

Although
the DeLorean DMC-12 was initialy built during 1981 to 1983 the Delorean Motor
Company, under different ownership, continues to manufacture replacement parts
for the car, and in 2007 started to offer 'new build' cars using a combination
of original parts from the Ireland factory, original parts sourced from the
original suppliers to the factory and reproduction parts.
