Red Bull X1

The Red Bull X1 concept race car was one of the vehicles which featured in the Gran Turismo 5 racing game.

The entirely theoretical vehicle will be the fastest and most powerful car in the game. Basically it will defy all current engineering capabilities, and offer the sort of performance only a futuristic Formula 1 car can offer.

Red Bull have enrolled the help of one of their F1 drivers, Sebastian Vettel, in order to help show off the car's capabilities by getting him to take the car to the limits in a dedicated racing simulator.

Power for the Red Bull X1 comes from a 3.0 litre twin-turbocharged V6 - which sounds fairly reasonable. But the peak power output of 1,483 hp @ 15,000 rpm is bordering on crazy.

The performance figures are equally ludicrous. The X1 tops out at 280 mph, hits 60 mph in just 1.4 seconds, gets to 120 mph in 2.8 seconds, and can generate cornering forces of 8.25G! That's similar to the current generation of fighter jets!

All of this would be deeply impressive if the Red Bull X1 were to exist in more than just the digital world. But if it were to be made, and I hope it is, Red Bull would have to build one of the most powerful cars on the planet, and then package it into a vehicle weighing just 615 kgs (1,356 lbs).

In the styling department, the Red Bull X1 looks like a cross between a Caparo T1 and the Red Bull F1 car. There's wings, vents and spoilers all over the place, and for improved aerodynamics there's an enclosed cockpit with an aircraft-style canopy.

Red Bull X1 dimensions:
  •          Length: 4.75 m (187 inches)
  •          Width: 2.18 m (86 inches)
  •          Height: 0.98 m (38.5 inches)
