G63 Gronos Black Edition
The
Mercedes G-Class is a very versatile automobile that can be, at times, a real
supercar in terms of straight-line speed. But should it?
Mansory
thinks so, as at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, the German car tuner
unveiled the Gronos Black Edition – a performance-enhanced, carbon-fiber
bedizen, widen G-Class.
Limited
to only 6 models and based on the hardened G63 AMG variant, the Gronos boasts a
40 mm expanded stance, thanks to its significantly wider carbon-fiber fenders.
In fact, as Mansory has its own autoclaves, the fenders aren’t the only thing
made from the composite material. The whole body-kit uses CF to become lighter,
yet more rigid, and the German tuner made sure everybody notices by offering a
matte-black painted, carbon fiber coated motif.
You
know the final outcome is massive when a set of 23-inch rims seem a normal
addition to the package. Sporting a body-painted charcoal-grey hue, the
mono-block cast wheel with “SPIDER” designation come wrapped in 305/35R23 tires.
The
new headlights and revised front-end is what sets Mansory apart from the other
tuners when it comes to the G-Class. A chiseled, cursive design might not be
everybody’s cup of tea, but the overall result looks unique and distant from
the rugged, pointy style the standard car had going on.
Of
course, being a Mansory product, the Gronos isn’t all show and no go, as it
comes with a reworked 5.5-litre V8 with genuine racing components that boasts
823 horses and an electronically limited 1,000 Nm torque figure.
Mansory has yet to release official performance data, but we think the modified
G-Wagon will come close to Brabus’ own hardcore interpretation.
Interior-wise,
Mansory says it only uses the best, flawless leather and alcantara, but we’re
more intrigued by that custom console made from carbon fiber. It does freshen
the car’s sharp-edged dash, but it seems kind of tacky. Ok, it tries its best
to integrate nicely in the cabin, but you can spot it’s an afterthought from a
mile away.
