Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata
Plug-in Hybrid has started arriving in select dealerships. The first-ever
Sonata Plug-In Hybrid is available in two trims, the Hybrid and Hybrid Limited
with prices starting at US$ 34,600 (without federal tax incentive).
The 2016 Sonata PHEV
has a pure electric range of 27 miles (43.45 km) and a class-leading combined
fuel economy of 40 mpg which has been made possible due to the its low
coefficient of drag which is 0.24 Cd – same as that of the Tesla Model S.
Dimension premium audio
system, 8-inch touchscreen navigation, 17-inch Eco-spoke alloy wheels,
hands-free Smart Trunk, and Blind Spot Detection System with Rear Cross-Traffic
Alert all are part of standard fitment. The Limited trim adds safety systems
such as Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beam
Assist and rear parking sensors.
Power for the electric
motor is provided by a 9.8 kWh lithium polymer battery system which is five
times larger than the Sonata Hybrid’s battery. It can be charged with a 120V
power outlet in less than nine hours or in three hours through a 240V charging
station.
The combustion engine
is a 2.0-liter Nu four-cylinder GDI engine that works in conjunction with a
50 kW electric motor having 32% more power than the motor found on the Sonata
Hybrid (38 kW). The combustion engine pumps out figures of 154 hp and 190 Nm of torque; the combined output is 202 hp at 6,000 rpm.
