Brabus leaves no stone unturned each time the Frankfurt Motor Show rolls in.
The marque’s latest special is a monster of a Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe that
has been dubbed the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo 4×4 Coupe. It features cosmetic
add-ons, optional interior enhancements and, of course, performance upgrades on
a monumental scale.
Brabus has cleverly
upped the displacement of the 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 engine to 6.0 litres (333
cubic inches to 361). The almost-new engine has larger forged pistons, a
special billet crankshaft and longer forged piston rods while the cylinder
heads have been tweaked to give better gas flow. The standard twin
turbochargers have also been swapped out for larger ones.
A new modified exhaust
manifold is also to be found. To support the new engine, it receives a
specially-designed carbon intake module that includes a new air filter housing
with a larger intake cross section. Bonnet-integrated air ducts supply the
engine with cool air. Elsewhere, the intake and charge air pipes are insulated
with striking “Gold Heat Reflection” material.
Three-inch thick
downpipes are attached to a redesigned Brabus stainless steel exhaust system
with controlled butterfly valves for better response while the exhaust
tailpipes are ceramic-coated. The intensity of the noise can also be altered
from a full-on V8 growl in “Sport” mode to a quieter “Coming home” mode.
As for the raw figures,
Brabus quotes a total of 850 hp at 5,400 rpm and a massive 1,450 Nm of torque
between 2,500 rpm and 4,500 rpm from the turbocharged 6.0 litre V8 engine.
Despite weighing 2,350 kg, the car goes from 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds
while top speed has been electronically limited to 320 km/h to due “tyre
limitations.” The seven-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission goes
untouched.
In terms of fuel
efficiency, Brabus claims the 850 6.0 Biturbo 4×4 Coupe can achieve a
consumption rating of 15.8 l/100 km on the urban cycle and 9.7 l/100 km on
highway. On the combined cycle, the car records a figure of 11.9 l/100 km. As
for CO2 emissions, the tuned GLE emits 278 g/km.
Cosmetic enhancements
for the GLE Coupe include a lip spoiler for the redesigned carbon front bumper
– LED lights are to be found along the large air intakes on both sides along
with custom air deflectors. The rear also features a carbon bumper with a
diffuser and air outlets. A carbon rear spoiler sits atop the tailgate.
A variety of alloy
wheels in either 21-, 22- or 23-inches can be opted for while a reworked
suspension setup lowers the car by 35 mm compared to the standard GLE Coupe.
The flagship 23-inch Brabus Monoblock “Platinum Edition” option is a
lightweight, high-strength wheel. Tyre options include products from
Continental, Pirelli and Yokohama.
Inside, the Brabus 850
is trimmed in a combination of Brabus Mastik and Alcantara. Also, a variety of
carbon and wood trims can be ordered in varying colours and finishes. Other
options for the cockpit also include aluminium door pins, pedals and stainless
steel scuff plates with adaptive multi-coloured Brabus lettering.
