Rolling out sports car
killing station wagons is more of an Audi thing, but VW could do worse than
adopting the same recipe for its new front-wheel drive Nordschleife king.
The limited production Golf
GTI Culbsport S posted a 07:49.21 lap, beating much more powerful cars like the
425 HP BMW M4 and the 707 HP Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Quite a sharp
weapon, this Golf, isn't it?
The 2.0-liter four-banger
turbo has been massaged to 306 HP and 380 Nm of torque, for a
0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and a 265 km/h top speed.
Specially tuned chassis and
electronics are also part of the package, along with a front differential lock,
aerodynamic elements and 19-inch wheels wrapped in semi-slick tires - plus,
much to purists' delight, it comes with a six-speed manual instead of a
dual-clutch auto.
X-Tomi's interpretation is
as good as they get, but such a Golf would completely defy the purpose. See,
what makes the Clubsport S so sharp is its 911 GT3, no-frills approach that
ditches the rear seats and throws practical issues out of the window to focus
on pure driving dynamics. On the other hand, there could be an argument for
adding the aero and chassis tweaks, keeping the rest of the estate as is and
still come up with a super estate. Like we said, though, in VW Group's scheme
of things, this is a four-ring specialty.
