2017 BMW 5 Series (Spyshot)

The next gen BMW 5 Series has been spotted testing in China, featuring lesser camouflage than before. A closer look reveals the headlight and grille designs of the mid-size luxury sedan. The 2017 BMW 5 Series is expected to debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in October.

The 2017 BMW 5 Series will draw design cues from the 2016 BMW 7 Series, as evidenced by the headlamp design. The trademark BMW kidney grille could feature active air ducts for efficient cooling, and the lower bumper adopts a simple design with a long intake across, while the M Sport variant will feature a sportier bumper.

One of the biggest upgrades in store for the next gen 5 Series is the new CLAR RWD platform with Carbon Core. Introduced in the new 7 Series, the platform integrates mass produced carbon fiber and various lightweight metals into its construction, thus bringing down the kerb weight by 100 kg, reportedly.

The 2017 BMW 5 Series will offer the latest B-Family of four-, six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with displacements ranging from 2.0L to 4.4L. Engine lineup will include B47 2.0L four-cylinder and B57 3.0L six-cylinder diesel units and B48 2.0L four-cylinder and B58 3.0L six-cylinder petrol units. Top-end models like M550i and M5 will get the 4.4L V8 twin turbo engine, tuned to meet the respective variant’s specification.
