2016 Formula E (New Design)
To the untrained eye most single-seat,
open-wheel race cars look pretty much the same. Form follows function and all
that. But the people behind the FIA Formula E Championship want theirs to look
different, so they've come out with a radical new front wing design.
Similar to some of the propositions
Pininfarina came up with recently, the new aerodynamic element features a
two-tier design that stands taller than the front wings you'd see in Formula 1,
GP2, Formula 3 or just about any other class of racing. That's not to say that
it will actually provide any more downforce than the old design, though.
“I don’t think it will make too big of
an impact on aero, which isn’t in the ethos of this championship,” said
reigning champion Sebastien Buemi. “But it’s a good way to show visual
development heading to Hong Kong for the start of season three.”
The new regulations will afford the
teams more latitude in terms of powertrain development in the upcoming
championship. However the chassis itself remains largely the same as the
Dallara-built Spark SRT_01E revealed two years ago.
