2017 Ford Mustang GT500 (Rumor)
As Ford furiously develops the brand new
Mustang GT500, it has emerged that the muscle car will eclipse the 700 hp mark,
comfortably making it the most powerful muscle car on the market.
Engineers at Ford Performance are aiming
to take that crown from the 707 hp SRT Hellcat pairing and to do so, may adopt
a brand new twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 engine.
While this engine has yet to be
confirmed for the car, a development mule has been spied testing that very
powertrain indicating that it's likely to make its way through to the finished
product. While such an engine will lack the visceral rawness of the GT350's
flat-plane crank 5.2-liter V8, it should prove the perfect candidate to join
the 700 horsepower club.
Rather than simply hitting 700 horses
however, Horsepower Kings says the new GT500 could pump out over 740 hp, a
significant rise over the previous-gen GT500's 662 hp and almost 100 hp more
than the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.
To ensure the new car outperforms its
rival, the carmaker will make it as lightweight as possible, meaning some of
the aluminum and carbon fiber parts of the GT350 range could be featured,
potentially include the R's carbon wheels.
If current reports are to be believed,
we should see the new GT500 towards the end of this year or in early 2017.
