2018 Mercedes A-Class
Early prototypes of the next-generation
Mercedes A-Class were spotted out in the open by our spies. This will be the
fourth generation of the baby Merc which is going to ride on a re-engineered
version of the MFA platform, codenamed MFA2.
The new modular architecture was
developed in conjunction with Renault and will make greater use of aluminum in
a bid to remove some weight out of it. The extensive changes will also make it
more suitable for alternative powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid version.
The same platform, but slightly
stretched will be used for the next B-Class, CLA and the upcoming compact SUV
called GLB. The new compact model from Mercedes is expected to feature a longer
wheelbase and wider tracks, with the overall dimensions remaining close to
those of the current model.
This will allow Mercedes to increase the
interior space, especially at the rear where the current model is considered to
fall behind its rivals. The boot will also be bigger and with a wider opening,
making it easier to load bulky items.
The company is planning two models in
the range: the classic five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. The latter
will be more practical and roomier than the CLA and will probably be a
China-only model, just like the fresh 1-Series Sedan.
As ever, a wide range of four-cylinder
engines, both petrol and diesel will be on offer in different states of tune. A
plug-in hybrid variant is also going to be introduced. As for the hot AMG
versions, reports are saying that Mercedes will offer at least two of them, an
A40 AMG with 300-plus hp and a fully-blown A45 AMG with around 400 hp.
The new Mercedes A-Class is expected to
make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017, with the
first cars to hit the streets in early 2018.
