2018 BMW M5 (render)

A new rendering of the 2018 BMW M5 (Codenamed BMW F90) has surfaced online, which appears to be based on the CAD sketches. This is likely our best look yet at the next generation BMW M5.

The next generation BMW M5 integrates the changes seen in the regular 5 Series that debuted on October 12, which include new LED headlamps, wider pair of kidney grilles with active ducts, new taillamps, and stronger character lines across the profile.

Compared to the outgoing M5, the future model features a similar bumper design but with larger intakes, redesigned side intake and a new rear bumper design with a diffuser and characteristic quartet of tailpipes. Inside, expect swathes of Alcantara, carbon fiber and M Badges in the 7er-inspired cabin, exclusive sports seats, steering wheel and gear selector.

The BMW F90 will source the 4.4L twin turbo V8 engine from the outgoing M5, but tweaked to produce close to 600 hp. Although that may not be a big leap over the current model’s 560 hp output, the new M5 is expected to be 100 kg lighter, thus translating to better power-to-weight ratio.

Reports suggest that the 2018 BMW M5 will be the first BMW M sedan to adopt an AWD system, although it will be drastically RWD-biased to retain some of the outgoing car’s handling characteristics.
