Mercedes is reportedly going to preview a new
four-door AMG model with a Vision concept next year. Autocar reports that the new AMG will be ready to
hit the market by 2019 and will likely carry the GT 4 nameplate. It will be a
uniquely styled and engineered model from AMG, following the footsteps of the
SLS and the current AMG GT.
Power will come from the latest version of the
twin-turbo, 4.0-litre V8 found in the new E63, as the automaker plans to rival
the sportiest models of the segment, including the Porsche Panamera. The new four-door model, codenamed X290, will be based
on a different platform.
The GT 4 will reportedly use a unique version of the
modular MRA architecture that underpins the C63, E63 and S63, featuring a
unique wheelbase and track width measurements. Other exclusive features might
include the added use of lightweight materials like aluminum and hot-formed
high-strength steel to reduce overall weight.
The new model is expected to be offered in two
states of tune, with the S to exceed 603 HP. Power will be transferred to all
four wheels via the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system that debuted in the E63,
complete with its so-called ‘drift mode’. Mercedes-AMG is also thinking about
coupling the engine to a new integrated starter generator (ISG), offering more
power for short periods via a 20hp electric motor mounted within the gearbox.
