The Mustang Red Tails distinguishes itself from the
rest of its kind by the inspiration it bears, which is to say the legendary
Tuskegee Airmen. With the help of the folks from Creations N’ Chrome, the special
edition Mustang was given an initial layer of gloss black followed by the
tuner’s own Magic Chrome finish. The car was given two Factory Ford
colors - Race Red and School Bus Yellow - before getting dressed up in the same
color scheme of the P-51 Mustang with matching hand-painted graphics.
The Red Tails Mustang
comes with a variety of new Ford-sourced components, including a front fascia
and grille that was taken from the 2013 Mustang Boss 302. The rear wing comes
from the 302 Laguna Seca while the rear fascia, and the quad exhaust system
were spiked from the 2013 Shelby Shelby GT500. A unique quality of the Red
Tails Mustang, if you look closely, are the functional exhaust pipes on both
sides of the car, just behind the front wheels. Those are inspired by the
protruding tips from the P-51 Mustang.
Inside, a number of additions to the Red Tails
Mustang also bear the same theme, particularly the new set of custom leather
Recaro seats that feature a Red Tails embroidery. Meanwhile, the steering wheel
comes from the Boss 302 and has been covered in Alcantara. while the customized
sill plates and floor mats bear the 332nd Fighter Group logo. Other interior
features include red-trimmed seat belts, an aluminum shift knob, and one-off
gauges with the Red Tails logo.
The Ford Mustang Red Tails Special Edition will
carry a 5.0-liter V8 engine that now has a Ford Racing supercharger added to it
with the output pegged at 624 horsepower.
Judging from previous Mustang models that have been
auctioned off at the EAA event, expect the Red Tails Mustang to hit close to
the US$ 400,000 winning bid of last year’s model, the Blue Angels Mustang.
