BMW introduced the first-ever BMW 1 Series Sedan
last year. It is a China-only model, but its still important for the global
markets as it will spawn the next-gen BMW 1 Series hatchback in H2 2018.
The
next-gen BMW 1 Series should see big improvements in the looks department over
the second-generation model criticised for its dull looks and awkward
proportions. The all-new 1er would have a more aggressive character than the
second-gen model, as depicted in the rendering.
The USP of the BMW 1 Series hatchback is its
rear-wheel-drive drivetrain layout. Moving to the third generation, though, the
smallest BMW will become a front-wheel drive vehicle. Allegedly known by the
codename ‘BMW F40’, the new generation BMW 1 Series will be based on the
familiar UKL platform. It is expected to be bigger yet lighter, thanks to the
shift to front-wheel drive drivetrain layout and the advanced platform.
The 2018 BMW 1 Series hatchback is expected to team
up with the familiar turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2.0-litre
four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines offered in the compact BMWs and the
MINI family. Reports say that inline-six cylinder engines will not be available
this time. Instead, the new range-topping engine model, alleged to be called
‘BMW 135ix’, will likely pack a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine
producing around 330 hp.
