All Porsche 935 racing cars are special, but the
following example, currently for sale for a cool US$ 2.85 million on James
Edition, is particularly remarkable.
Official dubbed the 1981 Kremer Porsche 935 K4 IMSA
GTP, it came to life shortly after the Porsche factory shifted its focus from
the production-derived 935 to dedicated prototype racers like the 936, 956 and
962. Independent racing team Kremer was among a handful to receive the
automaker's blessing to continue to create cars based around the 935, and the
K4 is one of them.
Just two K4s were produced, and both took
inspiration from the iconic Porsche 935 Moby Dick of 1978. This example was the
first of that duo and bares very little resemblance to an ordinary 935. In
fact, it has a custom tubular chassis and drivetrain and only uses a
Porsche-supplied roof and windshield.
Power comes from a 3.2-liter twin-turbo flat six
with an aluminum block and head. Capable of delivering 800 hp and 536 lb-ft of
torque at 6,100 rpm, the 935 K4 could reach 353 km/h with the correct
gearing. The car took five victories during the 1982 IMSA season and, in the
years since, has passed through the hands of many collectors, including actor
Nicolas Cage.
