Owners of the 2016 and 2017 Ford Mustang can now order licensed mechanical upgrades through Australian dealers for the first time. Ford Australia now offers a range of suspension and exhaust upgrades depending on which Mustang variant you choose – though most of these options are limited to the more powerful GT.

First up is a stainless steel 2.5-inch cat-back exhaust system (AUD 3584) for the Mustang GT integrated into the factory unit, which emits a better “V8 burble” – addressing a key complaint of the current car. Customers also have the choice of 4.0-inch tailpipe tips finished in chrome or black (below).

Next is the Track Handling Pack for Fastback models ($4130), which includes lowering coil springs, assembled front struts, upper strut mounts, rear shocks, sway bars, rear toe links and toe-to-knuckle bearings. The package was developed by Ford Performance primarily for track use.

For those who don’t want the full track-focused upgrade, customers can also choose the street lowering springs (AUD 1260) for Fastback models, which lowers the ride height by a full inch (25 mm), giving a more aggressive stance. The springs can be optioned in striking blue or gloss black finish for extra personalisation, with coil covers in matching colours (GT only) which are visible in the engine bay.

Finally, a Short Throw Shifter package is available for manual models (AUD 805), which also includes a Ford Performance gear knob. Compared to the standard car, the upgrade reduces throw distance by 19 per cent.

These upgrades are available from the dealer or as aftermarket upgrades, with a three-year, 100,000 km warranty offered on upgrades fitted to a new car, while owners upgrading their existing vehicles get a 12 month, 20,000 km warranty.
