Ford Mustang fans expecting the new GT500 to have
more power than the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat could be in for a rude shock. Statistics published in next month’s Motor Trend
magazine suggest it may ‘only’ have 680 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque.
The figures were published in a small snippet of the
magazine that details the Mustang and all its available powertrains, including
the new 5.0-liter supercharged V8 long rumored to power the latest GT500.
Ford itself hasn’t revealed how much power the GT500
will have but if it does have 680 hp, that will give it a 30 hp advantage over
the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. It will be slightly down on grunt compared to the
Hellcat however and only have 20 hp more than the previous-generation GT500.
If these new figures prove accurate, it’s
possible that Ford will market the GT500 as the most track-focused Mustang that
rivals the Camaro ZL1 1LE rather than being a one-trick, drag strip pony like
the Hellcat. Whatever the case may be, we should find out before the end of the
year.
