BMW's electric vehicle lineup is currently limited to the i3 but that could soon be changing. According to Germany's Handelsblatt, BMW will take direct aim at the Tesla Model 3 by unveiling an electric version of the 3-Series at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Details are limited at this point but the report indicates the model will have a range of 400 km. If that number is accurate, the vehicle could eclipse the Model 3 which is slated to have a range of at least 346 km.

It remains unclear if the car will be a concept or a production model but it will likely be based on the next-generation 3-Series. The new model is expected to be 6 cm longer than its predecessor and about 40 kg lighter thanks to its new CLAR underpinnings.

Besides the electric variant, BMW is reportedly working on at least two different plug-in hybrids which could have an electric-only range of up to 50 km. We can also expect an assortment of familiar petrol and diesel options with three-, four-, and six-cylinders.
