When it comes to fuel-efficiency, Maserati doesn't
exactly spring to mind as the brand is known for powerful and exotic V8
engines. That could soon change, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio
Marchionne has revealed all Maserati vehicles will be electrified after 2019.
Automotive News reports the push is part of a larger
effort to have more than 50% of FCA vehicles electrified by 2022 and comes as a
response to recent emission scandals.
Claiming electrification of petrol engines is now
"inevitable," Maserati will lead the way with the development of its
next two models. Details are expected to be released early next year, but
previous reports have suggested the company is developing a new platform which
will underpin an assortment of future models including hybrids and electric
vehicles. While it might sound strange to have Maserati lead the way, Marchionne
suggested the brand was chosen because it can charge higher prices to cover the
cost of buying batteries and electric motors.
Maserati's first plug-in hybrid is expected to
be based on the Levante SUV, which is slated to share its powertrain with the
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid that can travel up to 33 miles (53.1 km) on
electricity alone.
