There’s something hugely appealing about redesigning
an iconic performance car, bringing it into the 21st century and selling it.
Sadly, it rarely happens and if it does, it is only at the upper echelon of the
market. Despite its best attempts, even Nissan couldn’t justify bringing its
redesigned Datsun 510 to the market with the stunning IDx Concept.
The latest company to set our minds alight with a
retro sports car is Peugeot who recently teamed up with a 205 GTI enthusiasts
club to redesign the memorable hot hatch some 33 years after it first hit the
market.
The design of the modern hatch was led by design
director Gilles Vidal and shared on his Instagram page. The images depict the
car in a number of different states, all of which beautifully channel the
styling of the original and spice things up with modern twists like flared
wheel arches and LED lights.
While we’d love to see such a car be reborn, it is
unlikely to ever happen unless a proper business case for it could be made.
That won’t happen.
