Subaru
has finally managed to set a new Nürburgring lap record for a four-door sedan. The record breaking attempt was made in the WRX STI
Type RA NBR Special race car and the model was able to lap the Nordschleife in
6:57.5 minutes.
Sadly, the WRX STI Type RA
NBR Special is far from a production model. It was specially built by Prodrive
and is powered by a modified 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces more
than 600 hp.
According to Subaru Product Communications manager
Dominick Infante, "We brought the WRX STI Type RA NBR Special here to set
a record and call attention to the WRX STI Type RA that we will launch later
this year. The WRX STI Type RA promises a great deal, with improved performance
and styling and even better handling dynamics than the current car."
The two cars have little in common but the WRX STI
Type RA boasts a carbon fiber roof, a carbon fiber rear wing, and 19-inch BBS
wheels with Yokohama Advan Sports tires. The model also has a retuned
suspension, Brembo brakes, and Recaro front seats.
Power is provided by a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer
engine that produces and estimated 310 hp. It is connected to a
six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter.
