The Frankfurt Motor Show kicks off next month and a
new report is indicating BMW will use the event to introduce an X7 concept.
This isn't the first time we've heard about this particular rumor but BMW Blog
is now reporting the concept will feature a fuel cell powertrain.
Nothing is official as of yet but BMW has been
working on fuel cell technology for years and recently displayed a 5-Series GT
prototype at Hannover Messe. The prototype's fuel cell converted hydrogen into
electricity which feed a 245 PS electric motor.
BMW said the fuel cell enabled the
model to have "emission-free mobility" as well as "everyday
usability thanks to fast refueling times and an appetite for covering long
distances." It remains unclear if the X7 concept will use the same
powertrain as the 5-Series GT prototype but BMW's Klaus Fröhlich has previously
suggested fuel cells only make sense in models that slot above the 5-Series.
Regardless of whether or not a fuel cell is offered
on the production model, the X7 will go on sale late next year to battle the
Mercedes GLS.
