After reportedly being canned, the Golf R420 has been spotted completely bare doing its usual runs on
the Green Hell.
Previously, it was thought to receive an extremely
high-tuned 2.0 litre four-cylinder (EA888) engine making 400 hp, but the new
word is that an inline-five now takes over propulsion duty, possibly the same
2.5 litre turbocharged engine nicked from the Audi RS3, as suggested by the new
twin oval pipes. The RS3 gets 400 hp and 480 Nm of torque, with drive channeled
to all four corners through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It gets
from 0-100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds.
The Golf R420 spied here wears a mix of styling,
starting with the front fascia of the pre-facelift R, featuring the same
bi-xenon headlamps with LED DRLs and front bumper design. It sits on darkened
seven-spoke alloys lifted off older Audi S models, and the tail lamps are taken
off the regular Golf facelift. The rear spoiler is the same as the “standard”
Golf R, unlike the hideous rear wing first seen on the R 400.
If the Golf R420 makes it to production, it will go
head-to-head against the domineering Mercedes-AMG A 45, which draws 381 hp and
475 Nm of torque from a hand-built 2.0 litre M133 four-cylinder turbo. Apparently,
the next-gen A 45 will push over 400 hp.
