BMW is putting the final touches to the new X4,
which is expected to launch in the first half of 2018 but it’s the
range-topping M version that attracted the interest of our spies this time.
Power will come from a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline
six unit, codenamed S58, with reports suggesting a total output of around
450 hp. On paper the new BMW appears lacking on sheer power against its main
rival -the Mercedes AMG GLC 63- but we know that the Bavarians will find a way
to keep up with their arch-nemesis.
Based on the same underpinnings with the new X3, the
new X4 M will benefit from a range of weight-saving measures and the latest
driveline technologies BMW M has to offer. The new X4 will be produced at the
Spartanburg plant, next to the regular BMW X3.
BMW also looks to have nailed the SUV Coupe design
this time, giving the 2018 X4 a much more likeable shape but the overall
styling appears to be too similar with the GLC Coupe. We reserve our final
judgement for when BMW officially reveals the new X4 and its range-topping M
version in a few months.
