When it comes to semi-practical city cars that are
fuel efficient and small enough to park almost anywhere, the Smart ForTwo
cannot be beaten. However, for buyers looking for all these qualities as well
as respectable performance, the Mercedes-owned automaker doesn’t offer a
solution.
Sure, Brabus offers a number of tuning options for
Smart models but not everyone wants to dive into the aftermarket world.
Evidently, it seems the owner of this Smart is just like that. Recently snapped
in California by a Redditor, this Fortwo features an AMG badge on the rear and
while it could fool the casual observer, anyone who knows anything about cars
knows that an AMG-tuned version of the Smart isn’t available.
However, this car does have us thinking. What if AMG
did decide to offer a high-performance version of the Smart? If it was priced
competitively, we can imagine buyers lining up for it and a version based
around the electric Smart could provide AMG with a testing bed for its
electrified technologies. Sadly, achieving both a reasonable price and a potent
electric powertrain would be near impossible. What’s more, an AMG-branded Smart
would dilute the Mercedes performance division massively.
