Having completed countless testing and development
miles, Toyota will put its hydrogen fuel-cell heavy-duty truck to work at the
Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The zero-emission class 8 truck has been dubbed
‘Project Portal’ and will start moving goods from a number of terminals at the
Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach to local rail yards and distribution
warehouses on October 23.
Sitting beneath the skin of the truck are two fuel
cell stacks from the Toyota Mirai and a 12 kWh battery. This results in a total
of 670 hp and 1,325 lb-ft of torque, allowing the truck to lug around 80,000
lbs. The vehicle’s estimated range sits at over 200 miles.
In a statement, Toyota Motor North America executive
vice president Bob Carter said, “Toyota has led the way in expanding the
understanding and adoption of fuel cell technology. From the introduction of
the Mirai passenger vehicle to the creation of the heavy-duty fuel cell system
in Project Portal, Toyota continues to demonstrate the versatility and
scalability of the zero-emission fuel cell powertrain.”
