Borgward officially entered the GCC car market at
the 2017 Dubai Motor Show. To lure visitors to its stand, the company showcased
a chrome-plated Borgward BX5 with black alloy wheels and red brake callipers.
The Borgward BX5 is Borgward’s second model since
its resurrection in 2015. It is a compact SUV slotted below the Borgward BX7.
The UAE-spec Borgward BX5 measures 4,490 mm in length, 1,877 mm in width and
1,675 mm in height. It has a 2,685 mm wheelbase.
There are two engine options: 1.4-litre TGDI petrol
and 1.8-litre TGDI petrol. The 1.4-litre engine produces 150 PS and
250 Nm of torque. The 1.8-litre engine develops 190 PS and 280 Nm of
torque. Transmission choices include 6-speed manual (1.4L TGDI-only) and
6-speed automatic. An AWD system is available only in the 1.8L TGDI engine
model, that too optionally.
The Borgward BX5’s noteworthy exterior highlights
include Octagon grille, Xenon headlights, LED DRLs, LED tail lights and power
tailgate. Panoramic sunroof, leather steering wheel, 4.2-inch MID, 6-way power
driver seat with 4-way power lumbar support and heating, heated front passenger
seat, saddle leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control,
touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
and 8-speaker sound system are among the key interior features.
The Borgward BX5’s prices in the UAE start at AED
75,000. The Borgward BX5 competes with C-SUVs like the
Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, VW Tiguan and Jeep Compass in the country.
