BMW is working on bringing back
the 8 Series. Phased out before the turn of the millennium in favor
of the 6 Series, the 8 was one of the sleekest coupes Munich ever produced.
Judging from these latest spy shots, the new one will be at least as slick.
Spotted undergoing cold-weather testing, this
prototype for the 8 Series – which will come in both coupe and convertible
forms this time around – is wearing less camouflage than ever before. It also
appears to be wearing the optional M-Sport package, giving it even more of an
aggressive appearance.
Following on the concept that debuted this past
summer at Villa d'Este, BMW is gearing the new 8 Series to take on the likes of
the Mercedes S-Class coupe, Lexus LC, and Aston Martin DB11 – even the Polestar
1 and the Audi A9 (should that ever reach production).
Expect it to come in escalating degrees of
capability, from the “standard” model, past the M Performance version, and all
the way up to the full-on M8. That's something that, with apologies to the 850
CSi and Alpina B12, was never offered the first time around.
