Volkswagen has revealed that the eighth-generation
Golf will roll off the assembly lines at the Wolfsburg plant in 75 weeks from
now. Opening the calendar shows that
it’s the last week of June, 2019, which means it will likely be shown to the
public several months earlier, either at the Paris auto show this October and/or the Geneva motor show in March
next year.
Volkswagen has secured most suppliers, as 80 percent
of them are already under contract for the current Golf, which is “as sign of
considerable mutual loyalty”, according to the VW Board Member for Procurement,
Ralf Brandstatter, which “creates a broad basis of trust and provides greater
security for planning”.
Not much is known about the 2020 Volkswagen Golf so
far, even with the sketch released by the firm, but it will probably span a
larger wheelbase compared to its predecessor, and go through a mild diet on the
way.
New technologies are almost a certainty, and
previous reports spoke about semi-autonomous driving, which, if implemented, it
would up the ante for other compact cars, including the Ford Focus, Renault
Megane, Peugeot 308, and Opel/Vauxhall Astra.
