The Acura CDX was introduced in China nearly two
years so it’s surprising the crossover recently surfaced at the United States
Patent and Trademark Office. Automakers file countless applications every year
but this one is interesting as executives have previously hinted at the
possibility of bringing the model to the United States.
Last April, Acura vice president and general manager
Jon Ikeda said the CDX “interests a lot of our people.” He went on to say the
company was looking at bringing the CDX to the United States but noted this
isn’t a simple process as the crossover was designed for the Chinese market.
We reached out to Acura public relations manager
Matt Sloustcher who said “At this time, there is no plan to bring the CDX to
North America.” The news is a bit surprising given the booming compact
crossover segment but Sloustcher’s statement suggests things could potentially
change in the future.
The CDX debuted in 2016 and is based on the same
platform that underpins the Honda HR-V. The model features a turbocharged
1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 179 Hp and 240
Nm of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and
an all-wheel drive system.
While Americans shouldn’t expect to see the CDX, the
company is working on an all-new RDX which was recently previewed by a
prototype at the North American International Auto Show. The production model
will go on sale later this year and feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine that can be paired to a ten-speed automatic transmission
and a Super-Handling All Wheel Drive system.
