The current Maruti Wagon R is nearing the end of its lifecycle. Maruti Suzuki has started developing the next-gen Maruti Wagon R, spy shots published by Financial Express have revealed.

The next-gen Maruti Wagon R has a very familiar design. Like the current model, it has a boxy shape but it’s much smaller. The redesigned model has a much smaller bonnet and shorter front overhang. Making the car smaller could have something to do with distancing model from the Maruti Ignis in the market. At the front, the next-gen Maruti Wagon R has squarish headlamps, redesigned upper grille and bumper and a smaller lower grille.

Like the latest JDM-spec Suzuki Wagon R, the next-gen Maruti Wagon R is expected to ride on the company’s Heartect platform. It should offer improved safety with a more robust construction and ABS and dual-front airbags as standard. A more refined version of the K10B 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine (68 PS/90 Nm) may power the all-new Maruti Wagon R.

The next-gen Maruti Wagon R’s launch timeline is currently unknown. Before this model, the Maruti Suzuki will likely launch the next-gen Maruti Ertiga and the facelifted Maruti Ciaz this year. The next-gen Maruti Wagon R is said to have a three-row version as well, a sub-4 metre MPV like the Datsun Go+ and the Renault RBC. This model should join the range later during the lifecycle.
