The new generation Volkswagen Jetta that was
launched earlier this year is like a Passat on a slightly smaller scale, which
might suit those who aren’t looking for the latter’s abundance of space. The compact sedan promises to offer better just about
everything: exterior design, interior space, fuel economy, the latest tech
features, and so on.
The new Jetta starts at US$ 18,545, which makes it US$ 100
more affordable than its predecessor. Once it goes on sale in the second
quarter of 2018, the new Jetta will be available in five different trim levels,
namely S, to the SE, SEL, SEL Premium and R-Line, all of which have yet to be
detailed.
As far as powertrains are concerned, there’s
only one option: a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 148 hp and 249 Nm of torque. Customers will probably be glad to know that VW has dropped
the old six-speed automatic gearbox for an eight-speed auto, but lesser models
will still be offered with a six-speed manual transmission.
If Volkswagen hasn’t convinced you yet, and you need
to see the Jetta live before making a decision, then the 2018 Chicago Auto Show
is the place to be. This is where the sedan marks its second public appearance,
after its world premiere at NAIAS last month, and it will remain on display at
Windy City until February 19.
