BMW is working on plug-in hybrid and electric
versions of the X3 crossover and the latter variant has just been spied by Carscoops photographers.
Tthe iX3 is virtually
identical to the standard model but a few subtle tweaks indicate it’s fully
electric. First and foremost, there’s an electric charging port which is
located on the driver’s side front fender. The crossover also eschews an
exhaust system and instead has a full-width rear bumper without any cut outs.
The final change isn’t very noticeable by our spy
shooters say the model has a reduced ride height. This was likely changed as
part of an effort to improve the X3’s aerodynamics and eke out some additional
range.
BMW hasn’t said much about the iX3 but the company’s
e-mobility roadmap revealed the model will be introduced in 2020. It will be a
fourth-generation electric vehicle like the 2019 MINI EV.
Performance specifications remain unconfirmed but
the model will compete with the Audi E-tron, Mercedes EQ C and Jaguar I-Pace.
The latter two models will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month and have a
significant head start on the iX3.
While the model will be arrive after its key
competitors, BMW has already announced plans to offer 25 electrified models by
2025. This figure includes 12 battery-electric models such as the iX3.
