McLaren is the next Formula One team to reveal its
2018 race car, the MCL33, which is the first time in the brand’s 52-year
history that it has run a car powered by a Renault power unit. Fernando Alonso
and teammate Stoffel Vandoorne will be the team’s official drivers for the
upcoming season, both hoping for better fortunes after a less-than-impressive
2017.
The MCL33, as with every other 2018 F1 car, is
fitted with the mandatory Halo protection device for increased cockpit safety.
Various aerodynamic features that took advantage of loopholes in the rulebook,
such as T-wings and shark fin-style engine covers have also been removed.
For 2018, the car will wear a revised livery that is
inspired by the team’s iconic papaya orange and blue colour scheme that McLaren
first raced in F1 50 years ago. As mentioned at the start, the biggest change
on the MCL33 is a new power unit supplied by Renault, which replaces the
previous and unreliable one from Honda.
