Tata’s popular Nexon compact SUV will soon be
available with the option of an automated manual transmission (AMT) on both,
the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel versions. The AMT
gearbox-equipped Nexon/s is/are on display at the Auto Expo 2018. Market launch
for the Nexon AMT will take place in a
couple of months.
The AMT is based on the six-speed manual
transmission that is standard on both versions of the Nexon. The AMT system
features a creep mode that reduces the need for throttle inputs in stop-go
driving scenarios, and there’s also hill assist that prevents the vehicle from
rolling back on inclines. Drivers will also have the option to shift gears
manually using Tiptronic mode. Tata has retained the driving modes from the
manual Nexon on the automatic version; on offer are Eco, City and Sport modes
that alter engine characteristics.
The Nexon AMT also debuts a new paint shade – Etna
Orange. Visually, there’s nothing to distinguish the AMT and manual versions. Tata will launch the Nexon AMT in the coming months
and you can expect the car to cost about Rs 40-50,000 more than comparable
manual versions. Going by Tata’s strategy for its AMT offerings, we expect the
Nexon AMT will be available in mid-spec XMA and top-spec XTA trims only.
At present, the Ford EcoSport is the only compact
SUV available with the option of an automatic gearbox.
