At long last, the Electric GT (EGT) Championship’s
Tesla-based race series has been approved by the FIA, with the first race of
the new Electric Production Car Series (EPCS) scheduled to take place later
this year. The series will feature 20 drivers, all piloting a race-prepped
Model S P100D with 778 hp.
Each race will feature a 20-minute practice session
followed by a three-heat 60-minute qualifying session. Drivers will then take
part in a day race (60 km) as well as a dusk race (60 km). However, that’s not
all as once the race is finished, the top two and another two fan-voted drivers
will enter a spot of drifting.
The drifting competition will take place at
“suitable circuits,” with the winner walking away with a further three
championship points.
In an official statement from EGT, CEO Mark Gemmell
said, “this is such an exciting day for us as we confirm that the Electric
Production Car Series has been officially sanctioned by the FIA. We respect the
FIA and we are honoured to have their support ahead of our inaugural season.”
