A stunning 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster will
cross the auction block at RM Sotheby’s Fort Lauderdale auction in April and
would be a welcome inclusion in even the most comprehensive car collection.
This particular 300 SL Roadster was commissioned
from the factory by Sophus Kruse, the owner of a prominent Hamburg real estate
firm. To ensure the vehicle stood out, it was painted in Mercedes Blue with a
Light Yellow leather interior and a cream-colored top.
It isn’t just the looks which make this 300 SL
Roadster special. As a late production car, it was also fitted with four-wheel
disc brakes and an alloy engine block from the factory. A mere 210 examples of
the 300 SL Roadster are believed to have been made with these features.
In the 1970s, the current owner acquired the classic
Mercedes after it had been repainted in a different color. Under new ownership,
the car was repainted in the original Mercedes Blue and the yellow interior
expertly preserved. Since rolling off the production line on the 9th of May
1962, the car has been driven 36,600 miles.
The listing says that the classic will be sold with
owners and service manuals, service information, details on how to operate the
radio, and a largely complete original tool kit. Pre-auction estimates suggest
the car will sell for between US$ 1.2 million and US$ 1.5 million.
