Alpina revealed the brand
new XD4, the company’s first SUV Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show. Based off the
BMW X4, the new Alpina XD4 uses the same insanely powerful diesel powerplant as
the XD3, meaning a 3.0-liter straight six diesel with no less than four turbos, paired to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
The output figures are also the same when compared
with the 2018 XD3, meaning 388 PS from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm and 770 Nm from just 1,750 rpm and up to 3,000 rpm. Alpina claims 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 268 km/h for the new XD4, which are
class-leading figures at the mid-size SUV segment for the time being.
The engine itself employs a pair of smaller turbos
operating in parallel in the lower range before handing over their duties to a
pair of bigger ones that also feature variable turbine geometry. In addition to
a diesel particulate filter and a NOx storage catalytic converter, there is
also an SCR catalytic converter that injects Adblue solution for reduced
emissions.
The chassis has been updated with Alpina’s sport
suspension that employs electronically adjustable dampers and shorter and
stiffer springs, for sharper and more dynamic handling without sacrificing the
typical Alpina ride comfort.
The standard brake system features four-piston
calipers with 395mm discs at the front and 370mm discs at the rear, although
Alpina will also offer an optional set of composite brakes with 395mm drilled
discs at the front and 398mm at the rear, combined with sport-spec brake pads.
Alpina has also tuned this SUV’s xDrive all-wheel
drive system with its own software, increasing the agility and the dynamics of
the car – the active rear limited-slip differential helps too. A set of the
classic 20-inch Alpina alloys is standard fit, with the company also offering
the option of forged aluminum 22-inch wheels that are lighter by 15 kg compared
to a conventional set of aluminum wheels of the same size.
The interior is upgraded with Alpina’s fine
materials and special details, including the hand-crafted leather steering
wheel and Piano Lacquer trim. Alpina is known for offering a pretty much
endless list of customisation options to its customers, from paint finishes to
interior trim materials and upholstery colors.
The new 2019 BMW Alpina XD4 will become available
for order in the second quarter of 2018 and will be available only in left-hand
drive specification. The first deliveries in Europe will commence in early 2019.
