The BMW X7 is inching closer to production and we’re
getting a better look at the crossover as the company has started testing
prototypes with less camouflage. Previewed by the X7 iPerformance concept, the
production model has a familiar design as it retains the controversial front
fascia and massive twin-kidney grille. This particular model is also equipped
with the M Sport package that adds sportier front and rear bumpers.
At the back, we can see the rest of the design
closely echoes the concept but the production model has been equipped with
traditional side mirrors and conventional door handles. We can also make out an
upward sweeping character line and a modestly revised roof rack.
The rear of the crossover appears to be
significantly toned down as it eschews the concept‘s vertical rear vents.
However, the slender taillights carryover and they are connected by a thin
strip of trim which resides above the license plate. We can also see a
tailgate-mounted spoiler and chrome dual exhaust tips.
The BMW X7 will be built in Spartanburg, South
Carolina and the model is expected to be offered with an assortment of
different engines. Options remain unconfirmed but rumors have suggested the
crossover will have a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder with 335 hp and a 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 developing 445 hp.
We can also expect a diesel-powered model and a
plug-in hybrid variant. There have also been rumors about an M Performance
model and even an X7 M. The X7 will be unveiled later this year and reports
have suggested it could debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
