The new Mercedes-AMG G63 has made its global
premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, showing off its updated design and its new
features. The heavily reengineered off-road icon is now powered by AMG’s
twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 instead of the old 5.5-liter, producing 585 PS and 850 Nm. The more powerful engine is now paired to a nine-speed
automatic transmission.
Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed that’s limited to 220 km/h. Customers
will be able to raise the top speed limiter up to 240 km/h through the
optional AMG Driver’s Package.
The real highlight though is the updated chassis,
which is expected to make way much better use of the colossal power every time
a corner shows up. The front axle now features a new independent suspension,
while the rear features a five-link suspension.
Add to that the lighter bodyshell that also happens
to be 55 percent more rigid and the new Mercedes-AMG G63 sounds like a massive
improvement. However, it’s still a ladder-chassis SUV, so don’t expect any
miracles.
The boxy exterior now features a model-specific
front grille, along with new bumpers, bigger air intakes, LED headlamps and a
selection of up to 22-inch alloy wheels. The cabin on the other hand is all new
and features the new dashboard design, featuring a pair of 12.3-inch displays
for the driver’s instruments and infotainment system, and more room for the
passengers, especially for those at the back seat.
Mercedes will open the order books for the new G63
AMG on March 18 for European customers, with first deliveries to commence this
June. US customers will have to wait a little longer, as the market launch is
scheduled for the end of 2018.
