Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson recently released the
first photo of the 2019 S60 on Twitter and now an undisguised image has been
posted by Sweden’s Teknikens Värld. Set to be unveiled South Carolina this
summer, the redesigned model echoes the V60 which was recently unveiled at the
Geneva Motor Show. The S60 adopts a more
compact greenhouse and a slightly odd beltline with a large kick up on the rear
doors. The resulting design leaves a lot to be desired but we’ll hold off our
final judgment until the car is officially unveiled.
The picture also reveals the S60 will have
taillights that are similar to the ones found the S90. The rear bumper and
exhaust system appear to carryover from the V60, while the trunk appears to
have an integrated rear spoiler.
Volvo hasn’t said much about the S60 but it will
ride on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and should be
significantly larger than its predecessor. Engine options will be shared with
the V60 and this means we can expect a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder with
outputs of 150 PS and 190 PS. There should also be an
entry-level T5 petrol engine as well as a 2.0-liter T6 producing 310 PS and 400 Nm of torque.
Like the wagon, there could be two plug-in hybrid
variants including a T6 Twin Engine with a 253 PS four-cylinder
engine, a 117 PS electric motor and a 10.4 kWh lithium-ion battery
pack. It enables the model to produce a combined output of 340 PS and
590 Nm of torque. Thanks to the high-tech powertrain, the wagon can
accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and travel up to 45 km on electricity alone.
The S60 could also be offered with the T8 Twin
Engine powertrain which has a combined output of 390 PS and 640 Nm of torque. It uses many of the same components as the T6 Twin
Engine but has an upgraded engine producing 303 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Further down the road, we can expect a new S60 Polestar.
Little is known about the model but it is slated to have an electrified
powertrain.
The S60 will be built in Ridgeville, South Carolina
and production will begin later this year. The new plant has an annual capacity
of 60,000 units and the S60 will be made for both domestic and export markets.
