Well we haven’t seen many fashion-edition automobiles coming out of Detroit in the decades since then, but the trend is still alive and well in Europe.

There you’ll find special Fiat 500s done in partnership with Diesel and Gucci, luxurious Maseratis created with Ermenegildo Zegna, and this new Armor-Lux edition of the Renault Kadjar.

While it might sound to most of us like a brand of car wax or maybe a bulletproof limousine, the fashion-conscious French will know Armor-Lux as a brand of maritime clothing. It’s been churning out horizontal-striped shirts and blue windbreakers in the seaside region of Brittany for 80 years, and has now applied its skills to Renault’s compact crossover.

The special edition is based on the Intens trim, and adds to it a dose of subtle marine styling. It has a striped motif on the back of the vehicle, on the wheel arches, and on the steering wheel. It has Armor-Lux logos inside and out, and comes with 19-inch alloys, LED headlamps, and combination leather/fabric upholstery.

The Armor-Lux edition Kadjar will only be offered in France, where buyers will be able to order theirs in blue, grey, or two shades of white. It can be had with a diesel or gasoline engine, a manual or automatic, and front- or all-wheel drive. Pricing ranges from € 31,400 to € 36,900 (US$ 39-45k at current exchange rates).
