Volkswagen is actually making a
convertible based on the new T-Roc SUV as part of its major product offensive.
Announced officially last week, it’ll hit the market in 2020 and will be
produced at the Osnabruck plant in Germany, which is getting ready to receive
an 80 million (US$ 98 million) cash injection.
So, how will it look like? That’s a tough one to
answer, given that the car firm’s statement was accompanied by an official
sketch that wasn’t very revealing. However, it could be similar to these
renderings shared by Kleber Silva, who chose to keep it simple by taking the
current T-Roc and just chop off its roof. He also envisioned the T-Roc as a
three-door coupe as well, which looks quite interesting.
Since Volkswagen said that the convertible, which is
still some two years away, will be based on the T-Roc, it will probably sport
not just a a folding soft top but also a few styling tweaks compared to the
fixed roof version.
Some of the engines of the convertible will be
carried over from the five-door, but since VW’s future vehicles will be more
eco-friendly, it could also benefit from some sort of electrification. On the other
end of the spectrum, company execs have admitted that a hot ‘R’ version with
more than 300 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four and AWD is very
likely for the five-door T-Roc.
