With the Toyota 86 and sister model Subaru BRZ
turning six years old, it’s clear that they are approaching the end of their
lives. Naturally, this means that Toyota and Subaru are already considering a
successor, which, according to JapanTimes, might debut around 2021.
The publication says
that the new Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ will see the engine’s displacement
increase from the current 2.0-liters to 2.4. This obviously means more power,
although exactly how much, or whether it will be a naturally aspirated or a
forced induction unit, is not clear.
The replacements to the two sports cars are said to
get an even lower center of gravity for improved cornering performance.
Elsewhere, we expect the second generation to packed with the latest driving
assistance systems, including the now-mandatory in Europe eCall, a system that
contacts the emergency services in the event of a serious crash.
A new infotainment system should be offered as well,
and the design of the interior should improve over the current iteration, which
has been often criticized not only for not offering a more powerful version,
but for the materials used in the dashboard, too.
