Aston Martin has released the first teaser for a new
“flagship Super GT” called the DBS Superleggera, which will only be unveiled in
the June 2018. The new model will reportedly be the spiritual successor to the
Vanquish, the brand’s previous super grand tourer.
The DBS Superleggera is another component of Aston
Martin’s Second Century Plan, and will sit above the Vantage as well as the
DB11 in its model line-up.
The first part of the name was first coined in 1967
for a model designed by William Towns, before being brought up again in 2007
for a DB9-based model. These cars should be familiar to those who have seen the
following James Bond films: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Casino Royale and
Quantum of Solace.
As for the second part of the name, it refers to an
automobile coachwork construction technology developed by Felice Bianchi
Anderloni, who established Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. The Italian coachbuilder
has quite a history with Aston Martin, with both working together to create
iconic models such as the DB4, DB5 and DB6 Mark 1.
Aston Martin says the DBS Superleggera will “feature
the highest levels of performance, craftmanship and design” at the top of its
sportcar line-up but refrained from providing any details. Expect the DB11’s
5.2 litre twin-turbo V12 to be repurposed for use in the new model, along with
more aggressive styling.
