The Mercedes-Benz X-Class has made its debut in Australia, the pick-up going on sale there in X 220 d, X 220 d 4Matic and X 250 d 4 Matic forms. Pricing for the vehicle, which is available in load bed or cab chassis versions, starts from AUD 45,490.

The Australian line-up will have a total of 13 variants, based on three equipment grades – Pure is very much aimed as a workhorse for commercial customers, Progressive for those with higher requirements in terms of quality feel/comfort, and Power for the higher-end, urban lifestyle crowd.

The X-Class is powered by a Renault-sourced 2.3 litre four-cylinder diesel, which is also seen on the Nissan NP300 Navara in certain markets, with a single turbo on the X 220 d and a sequential twin turbo configuration on the X 250 d making for two output tunes.

On the pure rear wheel drive X 220 d and engageable all-wheel drive X 220 d 4Matic, the mill provides 160 hp at 3,750 rpm and 403 Nm from 1,500 to 2,500 rpm. For the X 250 d 4Matic, the unit offers 188 hp and 450 Nm at an identical rpm range. The engines are paired with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with a seven-speed automatic transmssion available as an option for the X 250 d.

Standard equipment for the pick-up in Australia includes seven airbags and an i-Size attachment system for two child seats as well as Active Brake Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. The Pure and Progressive trim level variant features a reverse camera as standard, with Power upping this to a 360-degree camera.

Kit fitted as standard in the Pure trim includes 17-inch steel wheels, front/rear unpainted black bumpers, halogen headlamps, fabric seat upholstery and plastic floor covering. Mod cons include an Audio 20 CD infotainment system with a seven-inch TFT screen and front/rear two-way speakers.

Buyers can add on equipment for the Progressive through three optional packages that are available – a Comfort Package adds on electrically-adjustable front seats, Thermotronic dual-zone AC and Artico/Dinamica seat upholstery, while a Style Package introduces LED High Performance headlamps and part-LED tail lamps and 18-inch six-twin spoke light-alloy wheels, among others. There’s also a Parking Package, which adds Parktronic and a 360-degree Camera.

The range-topping Power has all the above, adding on an instrument panel with upper section in Artico leather with contrast topstitching and matt black pixelated trim. It also gets Keyless Go, a Comand Online multimedia system with navigation and a leather-wrapped steering, shift lever knob and handbrake lever. Additionally, there’s chrome elements on the front and rear bumper.

A 255 hp/550 Nm V6 diesel engine will also make its way to Australia by the end of 2018, and the top X-Class model will come with 4Matic and 7G-Tronic Plus as standard, along with Dynamic Select drive modes.
