BMW customers who want M3 and M4 performance but the
space and high-driving position of a crossover will soon have the answer; the
BMW X4M. Spied undergoing high-speed track testing at Germany’s Nurburgring,
the X4M appears to be fitted with the bold and aggressive body panels
obligatory for any M-branded model. Take the rear, for example.
This prototype is clearly wearing a bumper that
takes cues from other BMW M models and houses four circular tailpipes.
Additionally, a small lip spoiler is affixed to the trunklid while a pair of
humps are also visible above the rear window, as found on lesser variants.
Changes at the front seem limited to a new bumper and enlarged air intakes.
BMW already has a performance-oriented X4 on
showroom floors, namely the X4 M40i. This model features a 3.0-liter TwinPower
Turbo six-cylinder engine with a healthy 360 PS and 369 lb-ft of torque. That’s
enough to launch the vehicle to 100 km/h in a very fast 4.8 seconds.
The X4M will take this performance one step further.
Power will be sourced from the brand’s new S58 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder
engine complete with a pair of turbochargers. This powertrain will reportedly
be capable of pumping out at least 450 hp to all four-wheels through an
automatic transmission for a 0-100 km/h in the low 4 second range.
A global launch for the model is anticipated in the
second half of this year.
