The Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder promises to be the most focused 718 to date and the company has begun testing the car on the Nurburgring. The model has an aggressive front bumper which mimics the 918 Spyder. We can also see a vent below the hood and lightweight alloy wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system with yellow calipers.

Bigger styling changes occur out back as the Boxster Spyder has been equipped with a unique soft top and a model-specific rear deck lid. The latter has two channels which are separated by the third brake light. Other notable styling features include a rear spoiler and an aggressive diffuser. We can also see a prominent dual exhaust system and a tiny rear window.

While the rest of the 718 lineup has turbocharged engines, previous reports have suggested the Boxster Spyder will use the naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine that resides in the 911 GT3. The engine develops 500 hp in the latter model but it will obviously be detuned for use in the 718. Given that the 718 Boxster GTS has 365 hp, it’s likely that the engine in the 718 Boxster Spyder will produce at least 400 hp and some reports have claimed the model could have as much as 430 hp.

Regardless of the final numbers, the Boxster Spyder is expected to be significantly lighter than the standard model. Like its predecessor, the car is slated to have lightweight sport seats and a minimum of equipment as both air conditioning and the audio system are expected to be options. The Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder could debut later this year but nothing is official as of yet.
