The Range Rover Velar finally makes its launch debut in Malaysia, with Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia offering two variants to the public – Velar and Velar R-Dynamic. First revealed back in March last year, the attractive SUV is positioned between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

Both variants come with the P250 powertrain, which consists of an Ingenium 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with Continuously Variable Valve Lift (CVVL) and a twin-scroll turbocharger. The mill outputs 250 PS at 5,500 rpm and 365 Nm of torque from 1,200 to 4,500 rpm, with an eight-speed automatic transmission mated to it.

Performance-wise, the zero to 100 km/h sprint will take 6.7 seconds, while the top speed is 217 km/h. As this is a Land Rover product, there’s an all-wheel drive system as standard too. The AWD features JLR’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) to ensure maximum traction in any given situation. This is achieved by variably distributing engine torque to the front and rear wheels via a single-speed transfer box with an electro-mechanically activated multi-plate wet clutch.

The exterior equipment list includes higher-spec Matrix LED headlamps, flush retractable door handles, hands-free powered tailgate and an integrated rear spoiler. Where the Velar comes with 20-inch seven-spoke Style 7014 rims, the Velar R-Dynamic gets larger 21-inch ten-spoke Style 1033 with satin dark grey finish unit, along with a styling kit. The kit can be identified by the bolder front bumper, twin chrome exhaust finishers and R-Dynamic branding on the vehicle.

Moving inside, both variants come with the InControl Navigation Pro infotainment system that is paired with the Touch Pro Duo interface. The latter features two 10-inch touchscreens, which are integrated seamlessly behind a glass-like surface to remain hidden until lit.

Those aren’t the only screens in the Velar either, as there’s also a 12.3-inch unit in the instrument binnacle called the Interactive Driver Display. You can choose from three different views here – Dual Dial, Single Dial or Extended – along with the ability to control other function using the hidden until-lit switches on the leather steering wheel (R-Dynamic gains chrome bezels).

Other items include 10-way powered seats (driver seat memory function), ambient lighting, 825-watt, 17-speaker Meridian sound system, dual-zone climate control, Intelligent High Beam Assist, Morzine headliner, head-up display (only for the Velar R-Design but optional for the standard Velar) and a panoramic sunroof (Velar R-Design only).

In the Velar, the seats are upholstered with perforated grain leather while the Velar R-Dynamic adds suedecloth to the mix. Also available as an option is a durable wool-blend premium textile and suedecloth combo that was developed as part of partnership with the world-renowned Kvadrat.

Safety-wise, you’ll get six airbags as standard along with a bevy of systems. These include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Roll Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), ABS with EBD, and rear Isofix child seat anchors.

An even higher-spec Velar P380 R-Dynamic will also be offered with a 3.0 litre supercharged V6 packing 380 PS at 6,500 rpm and 450 Nm at 3,500 rpm. The P380 model offers a quicker century sprint time of 5.7 seconds and a higher top speed of 250 km/h. It also gets the same equipment list as the Velar P250 R-Dynamic, albeit with the Windsor leather upgrade (driver airbag cover, door top roll lower and mid instrument panel), autonomous emergency braking and air suspension.

Customers will get to choose from eight exterior colours – Fuji White, Yulong White, Corris Grey, Santorini Black, Kaikoura Stone, Firenze Red, Silicon Silver and Carpathian Grey – along with five interior colour palettes – Ebony/Ebony, Acorn, Vintage Tan/Ebony, Eclipse/Ebony and Light Oyster/Ebony. Also on offer are two additional 22-inch wheel designs – seven split-spoke Style 7015′ with gloss black finish and nine split-spoke Style 9077 with diamond turned finish.

Prices start at RM 529,800 for the Velar, which is inclusive of GST but excludes road tax, registration and insurance. Meanwhile, the Velar R-Dynamic commands a higher premium at RM 588,000, and both will come with the Land Rover Care programme which includes a five-year warranty, five years’ free service and three years’ roadside assistance. Pricing for the P380 model will be announced later on.
